Scotland during World War 2 During World War 2, scotland was engaged from september 3rd 1939, when the United Kingdom came into war against germany after the invastion of Poland. From the summer 1940, the germans launched the battle of Britan to prepare for the invasion of the island. But the Royal Air Force was efficient enough to defeat the luftwaffe. The german planes bombing Scotland were coming fromNorway. At the end of the war, scottish soldiers were part of the allied troops who defeated the germans in France and went up to Germany. Scotland had 34 000 soldiers killed during the war (during the battle of england and after when scottish soldiers came to liberate France). During the air attacks, nearly 6 000 civilians died, particularly during the bombings on Clyside in march 1941 when only 8 houses from about 11 000 survived. WW2 was not the deadliest War for Scotland but was a painful moment because the scottish population suffured (compared to the first World War). (see Wars of Scotland )
